Breakfast shows

March 2, 2009

Since I came to Australia I haven’t listened to radio and watched television too much. There are one hundred excuses why. But this time one of my goals is getting involved in Australian’s culture and listening to the radio has been one of the best ways. One of the tasks for this week was to review two breakfast radio programs, and I picked up Nova and Mix stations. Both Nova and Mix have a funny program, but I could catch some differences between them.

I listened two days in a row to Mix, meanwhile I traveled one hour and a half from my house to Holmesglen Institute. The first thing I didn’t like about the program is it had too many ads. I know, this is a commercial radio station, but even the presenters made ads in the program. I was expecting more comments, reports and more features, but that one and a half hours became very few real minutes in the time of the show. However their knowledge of presenters about entertainment information, made the program easy flowing. On the other hand, it’s evident that this program targets mature audiences, especially females. I noticed that Mix Mornings program with Brig, George & Tom have chemistry and the show flows very well. I especially liked all of the presenters that were not afraid to share their points of view even if they didn’t agree.

The next two days I tuned in to Nova station and I found a funny program to expend my mornings on the train. The first program that caught my attention was Hughesy and Kate, the breakfast show on Nova. Their English is much clearer than the other presenters on other stations, although they use slang as well. The topics in the program are light and they have good sense of humour. However, I didn’t like their tendency to interrupt the caller constantly and sometimes they spend too much time talking about themselves instead of allowing the guests to talk. In spite of all this, I chose Nova’s breakfast program as my morning radio station.

774 ABC vs 3AW

February 15, 2009

I came to Australia one year ago. In this time I wasn’t involved in Australia’s society because my plan was only stay in Australia for 8 months. But after I finished my English course I decided to stay in Australia for more time (I don’t know how long). Then I formally became immigrant. Now I’m starting to know more about this country.

I was hard for me to compare the coverage by 3AW and 774 ABC Melbourne in bushfires in Victoria. First of all both radios stations 3AW and 774 ABC Melbourne broadcasted many time about that issue. However I noticed that 3AW address the programs to caller’s stories. They took some calls from people with histories about bushfire and ask them for details to give the big picture about the tragedy. In this way 3AW’s broadcasting had more emotive content. For example, Ross Stevenson and John Burns Breakfast program’s hosts made an interview with a lady who’s son got married that Saturday — 8th February and the wedding was very close to bushfires and they asked her describe the scene.

On the other hand, 774 ABC Melbourne broadcasted more news and facts about bushfires through reporters and interviews.

Even in their websites you can see the difference. While 3AW have photo-galleries with titles like “Marysville: Return to Hell”, 774 ABC Melbourne have bushfire information like people trying to locate family or ABC bushfire community. This shows the different points of view about the coverage of the tragedy.
